Dr Vandana Shiva, is a physicist, environmental activist and author. Shiva, currently based in Delhi, is author of over 300 papers in leading scientific and technical journals.

She is one of the leaders of the International Forum on Globalization, (along with Jerry Mander, Edward Goldsmith, Ralph Nader, Jeremy Rifkin, et al.), and a figure of the global solidarity movement known as the alter-globalization movement.

She has argued for the wisdom of many traditional practices, as is evident from her interview in the book Vedic Ecology (by Ranchor Prime) that draws upon India’s Vedic heritage.

The Chipko Movement – The Original Tree Huggers

The Chipko Movement – Protecting Trees From being Felled

The Chipko movement  is a movement that practised the Gandhian method of  non-violent resistance, through the act of hugging trees, to protect trees from being felled.

    Original Tree Huggers

Dr Shiva participated in the nonviolent Chipko movement during the 1970s. The movement, whose main participants were women, adopted the tactic of hugging trees to prevent their felling.

Their actions inspired hundreds of such actions at the grassroots level throughout the region. By the 1980s the movement had spread throughout India and led to formulation of people-sensitive forest policies, which put a stop to the open felling of trees in regions as far reaching as Vindhyas and the Western Ghats.

Seed is the source of life and the first link in the food chain. Control over seed means a control over our lives, our food and our freedom.
Corporations like Monsanto have created a seed emergency — an emergency through patents on seeds, seed monopolies, biopiracy, genetic engineering and creation of non -renewable sterile seeds. Seed monopolies have pushed 250,000 farmers to commit suicide in India. After contaminating farmer’s seeds and crops, Monsanto sues farmers “for stealing their gene”, putting the polluter pays principle on its head, and making it the polluter gets paid principle.
The multidimensional emergency created by patents on seeds and GMOs needs a global collective response.
Collectively, we must stop the patenting of seeds. Join the Global movement on Seed Freedom to stop the corporate hijack of seed and with it, the hijack of our freedom and our future

Hi Gaye – great blog. But it needs to come with a health warning – before you start hugging trees, check the species. I had a friend who enthusiastically hugged a tree in Nairobi, but had to be hospitalised as its bark was covered in thorns. Ouch….:)

Hi Laura, ouch us right! I’ve seen pictures of some of those thorny trees in Africa..yikes!! We have some here that leave an impression too.. LOL .. Thank you for visiting and sharing and I hope your week is a lovely one. xx 🙂

Wishing nothing but success for the Green Planeteers and the Hunger Project.

This is one of the tremendous things today’s society, the commoner, most all have the ability to make a difference. No matter how small that action may be, it can now be collectively applied to bring about change. The days of bloated bellies paraded in front of the camera to line the wrong pockets are coming to an end!
